#ForEveryChildResults UNICEF and partners reached over one million children in Lebanon last year

Strong partnerships with 22 donors and 84 implementing partners made UNICEF’s work for children possible in 2018

Beirut, 10 April 2019 – UNICEF and partners supported more than one million girls, boys, adolescents and young people across Lebanon in 2018 with health, nutrition, education and child protection services. Working in close collaboration with the Lebanese authorities, UNICEF continues to put children at the heart of its programmes, bridging humanitarian action and development work.

Last year, with the support received from the international community, more than 422,000 girls and boys were enrolled in formal education and 50,000 adolescents and young people in programmes to improve their professional readiness. Children’s immunization coverage was improved, contributing to the vaccination of almost 500,000 boys and girls. UNICEF supported programmes also delivered greater access to safe water and sanitation, reaching over 550,000 people.

Support to the child protection system facilitated the access of 6,500 children to specialized psychological support, and the access to more than 18,500 girls and women access to mobile and static safe spaces. Child- focused social assistance programme reached 50,000 children, and the winter response provided winter clothes and cash-transfers to refugee children in informal settlements.

“Every child deserves a fair chance in life”, said Tanya Chapuisat, UNICEF Representative to Lebanon. “By achieving real results and real progress for the most vulnerable girls and boys, we all are showing that progress is possible when we join efforts. UNICEF results in 2018 were feasible thanks to 22 donors from all over the world, and 84 partners that we support in Lebanon who deliver tangible results for children. However, much more needs to be done to reach every vulnerable child, and we count on our donors to continue making children and young people safer today and better off tomorrow”.

The children and young people reached by UNICEF supported programmes in Lebanon are Lebanese, Syrian and Palestinian. All vulnerable children continue to be UNICEF’s target in 2019, marking the 30th anniversary of the Convention on the Rights of the Child (CRC). Yet today, too many childhoods are cutshort when children are subject to discrimination, suffer from exploitation or are robbed of their childhoods by conflict and violence. In 2019 we have a chance to increase action and results for children. UNICEF is determined to make the most of this opportunity to continue accelerating progress on child rights implementation, so that for every child, every right is fulfilled, now and for generations to come.Notes to editors:
