LIFESTYLE CHANGES TO LOWER COLORECTAL CANCER RISK March is Colorectal Cancer Awareness month, the third most common cancer among men and women worldwide. What can you do to prevent colorectal cancer? Here are some lifestyle changes that can lower colorectal cancer risk: • Don’t smoke. Smokers are 18% more likely to develop colorectal cancer. • Get enough calcium and vitamin D. Consult your doctor for the recommended dosage. • Control belly fat. Big bellies increase the risk of colorectal cancer. • Avoid red, processed, salted and smoked meat. • Fight cancer by eating more: ◊ Folate-rich foods such as orange juice, melons and strawberries, asparagus, eggs, sunflower seeds and leafy green veggies. ◊ Tomatoes as well as tomato paste and juice. ◊ Cruciferousvegetables(broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage,Brusselssprouts, andkale). ◊ Curcumin spice can suppress the transformation, proliferation, and invasion of cancerous cells. • Exercise. Get at least 30 minutes of moderate to vigorous activity at least five days a week. • Get screened. Testing usually starts at age 50 or at earlier stage in case of family history, and options include colonoscopy, sigmoidoscopy, and fecal occult blood testing. • Know your family history. Up to 20% of people who develop colorectal cancer have a relative with the disease.
