To mark Earth Day and reaffirm its environmental responsibility, LG Electronics – Iraq has joined forces with Shala Organic Farm to back the “Pick It With Your Own Hands” campaign, a three-day initiative in which local farm workers manually cleared 22 donums of organic wheat fields of invasive weeds without any chemical herbicides. The effort underscores sustainable farming practices and helps secure certified-organic seed free from chemical residue.
Wafaa Salah-al-Din Hamandi, founder of Shala Organic Farms, stated:
“Our wheat is at risk, and the Earth’s call cannot be ignored. In Iraq’s fertile plains, invasive Fajila weeds deprive our wheat of vital nutrients. We refuse to apply the D4D chemical herbicide, remaining true to organic principles. At Shala we sow an authentic Iraqi wheat variety—rich in flavour, aroma, and protein yet low in gluten—and nourish it only with liquid organic fertiliser. We are proud that LG, a leader in sustainability and clean agriculture, stands with us today to safeguard this national treasure.”
Ashraf Abu Al-Huda, Marketing Director for LG Electronics Middle East, commented:
“At LG we believe innovation and environmental stewardship go hand in hand. By supporting Shala Farm, we strengthen our commitment to sustainability and help preserve Iraq’s agricultural heritage. This initiative reflects our vision of ‘Life’s Good’ for all through eco-friendly practices.”
Al-Hashimi added:
“We take pride in this partnership, which embodies our shared vision of a cleaner environment and purer food. We look forward to further initiatives that fuse technology with sustainability for the benefit of society and future generations.”
This campaign forms part of LG’s global sustainability strategy, centred on reducing its carbon footprint and enhancing resource efficiency. By empowering local organic farmers, LG aims to build a more sustainable future for Iraq.
LG Electronics has earned internationally recognised sustainability certifications, including Carbon Trust verification for carbon-emission reduction and Intertek certification for resource efficiency. This initiative in Iraq mirrors LG’s worldwide commitment to cutting carbon emissions and advancing sustainability across all operations. The programme also aligns with LG’s plan to increase recycled-material use and cut plastic consumption, targeting 50 percent recycled plastic by 2025—equivalent to recycling 7,700 tonnes of plastic waste annually. More than 500 farming households in Baghdad and its outskirts are expected to benefit in the first year, with expansion across Iraq in coming years. The partnership aims to boost organic-wheat yields by 30 percent while keeping quality and unique characteristics intact.
LG will chronicle this pioneering experience in a short-form documentary series spotlighting the challenges and achievements of sustainable organic farming in Iraq, to be released on the company’s website and social-media channels.
