THE AMERICAN UNIVERSITY OF BEIRUT MEDICAL CENTER
Beirut, 26 June 2023
To raise awareness about Multiple Sclerosis and to support patients treated at the Nehme and Therese Tohme Multiple Sclerosis Center at the American University of Beirut Medical Center, Friends of MS reactivated their yearly fundraising activities by organizing a “Summer Vibes” party on Thursday, June 22, 2023, at Le Yacht Club-Zaitunay Bay, Beirut.
Multiple Sclerosis (MS) is a chronic disease that attacks the Central Nervous System (CNS) causing mild to severe disabilities if not treated. This disease affects all age groups but more commonly starts between ages 20-30 and is two to three times more common in women than men. More than 4,000 patients are registered at the Nehme and Therese Tohme Multiple Sclerosis Center, and the number has been increasing annually by 18 percent to 20 percent.
The Nehme and Therese Tohme Multiple Sclerosis Center is a center of excellence that cares for patients with MS. The center is considered one of a kind in the MENA region and designated to serve patients with MS and other demyelinating diseases of the CNS. The center’s main asset is its competent and expert team. The team includes specialized healthcare members and expert research staff. The Nehme and Therese Tohme Multiple Sclerosis Center is the premier reference center for research on MS in the MENA region.
Friends of MS joined Nehme and Therese Tohme Multiple Sclerosis Center as a volunteer group to support the center on multidimensional levels either by raising funds to help underprivileged patients suffering from MS treated at the center, by helping in Lebanese MS awareness campaigns, or by contributing to MS-related research.
The “Summer Vibes” party was an extremely successful event. More than 280 attendees were present to support this cause amongst President Fadlo R. Khuri, H.E. Wael Bou Faour, Mr. Taymour Joumblat, Mrs. Mona Makhzoumi, Judge Marwan Abboud, H.E. Said Asmar, and many other renowned people from the Lebanese society.
The event started at 8:00 pm with a few keynote words and ended with a lively ambiance. Mrs. Roula Douaidy, a friend of MS at the American University of Beirut Medical Center, welcomed the audience and thanked the sponsors and contributors. Director of the Nehme and Therese Tohme Multiple Sclerosis Center, Professor Samia Khoury, highlighted the importance of giving in helping MS patients with their treatment. AUB President Fadlo R. Khuri thanked the audience for their faithful support of all American University of Beirut and its medical center causes and emphasized how the valuable services provided at the Nehme and Therese Tohme Multiple Sclerosis Center are aligned with the American University of Beirut and its medical center vision and mission. He also commended Professor Samia Khoury for her never-ending clinical and scientific achievements.
The presence of centers of excellence like the Nehme and Therese Tohme Multiple Sclerosis Center are assets to the medical care infrastructure of the country as well as the MENA region.
All proceeds raised from the event will be used to support the treatment of underprivileged MS patients at the Nehme and Therese Tohme Multiple Sclerosis Center.
