On Tuesday December 11, Global Compact Network Lebanon (GCNL) kicked off celebrations of the festive season with a ceremonial lighting of the Christmas SDG Tree in the halls of Beirut Souks. This marked the inclusion of a larger Lebanese community in mainstreaming the 17 Sustainable Development Goals by lighting up the heart of the city and working towards the UN 2030 Agenda. GCNL strives to stay true to their mission and further inspire a national movement towards responsible sustainability.
The event saw the debut of a stunning 7m high natural rooted Christmas Tree, designed by the leading Lebanese designer Zuhair Murad. Mr. Murad designed the tree exclusively for this event, highlighting on the natural aspect of the tree, which will then be replanted in Mount Lebanon. Solidere was the ardent supporter to this event.
GCNL is proud to be the driving force that connects and catalyzes insightful relationships that highlight and accomplish actionable and sustainable practices in the nation. Not only was the theme of the event related to sustainability, but so were the products used to orchestrate it. Wooden donation boxes for food, clothes, and toys were set up for the public to contribute to.
The event was held under the patronage of H.E. Mr. Saad Hariri, represented by MP Ms. Bahia Hariri, who embodied the P.M.’s commitment to the 17 SDGS.
MP Dr. Dima Jamali welcomed the guests to the event, and highlighted the impactful role of the private sector in being the active force of change in Lebanon, and on the collaboration between all communities in attaining a better future for Lebanon. Dr. Jamali then urged the audience to ignite their Christmas spirit in harmony with the 10 UNGC Principles and engage in the activities of the day set up by GCNL. This was followed by a word from the Events and Advertising Service Manager at Solidere, Ms. Joane Merhi.
Lena Ziadeh, along with the Coralino Kids Choir, performed Christmas carols. The day was closed by a spectacular show by Kidzmondo in collaboration with Kristy’s Agency.
On December 22, with the collaboration of UN Women, AIESEC, Blessing Foundation and Froz, GCNL will hold a day full of educational and entertaining activities for the public revolving around the 17 SDGs.
