Beirut, Lebanon, November 26, 2021: On 13 and 14 November, the artists of the ArtEvolution programme presented their performances at Mansion, Zoukak El Blatt. The event included six performances spread over two days. The performances were followed by Q&A sessions with the artists, who also interacted with the numerous visitors through participatory performances.
On the first day: Christian Sleiman introduced us to the seasonal rituals of foraging while serving tea and food; Ahlam Dirani and Rima Kaddissi presented a performance on body reflection; Hashem Hashem and Partricia Nammour presented a performance on their experience of body transition while drawing parallels with the physical city of Beirut.
One the second day: Nohad El Hajj presented his research onexperimental ways of walking in the city of Beirut; Nicolas Fattouh performed about the act of mourning; Nivine Kallas danced based on the urge to move and triggered by a violent effect on the nerves of movement.
I was thrilled with the variety of performances and that this venue (Mansion) is perfect for this kind of event as it provides such an intimate setting for the performers. I hadn’t heard of the programme before, but I’m glad I came here! – Guest
During the first edition of the ArtEvolution programme, participants went through five phases: the ArtEvolution Workshop, held at Hammana Artist House, which explored collaborative and inclusive working methods; the ArtEvolution Reflection, a five-month project development phase where they received funding to take their projects forward; the ArtEvolution Impulse, a series of roundtable discussions; the ArtEvolution Exchange, where the participants were invited to attend the Ruhrtriennale and the “This is not Lebanon. Festival for Visual Arts, Performance, Music and Talks” (supported by the Goethe-Institut Libanon) in Germany to exchange with artists and cultural practitioners based in Germany; the ArtEvolution Platform, the final event of this programme, where they presented their work-in-progress in various formats.
Stay tuned, ArtEvolution will take place again in 2022! A Call for Applications for emerging artists working in the field of performance art will be launched early next year. For more information, please visit www.goethe.de/libanon/artevolution
