Beirut, March 2016: G NGO organized a musical concert within the activation of Earth Hour in Lebanon for the second year in a row. It was held at Uberhaus- Beirut Waterfront, on Saturday, March 19, 2016, in the presence of Youth and Sports Minister Abdul Muttalib Hinnawi and the United Nations Special Coordinator for Lebanon (UNSCOL) Mrs. Sigrid Kaag, along with media and public figures.
Lights were turned off for an hour at 8:30 pm Beirut time in a number of official buildings such as Grand Serail and the port of Byblos, universities and houses, as well as the municipality of Beirut, at the request of the governor of the city of Beirut Mr. Ziad Shabib, in order to unite Lebanon in spreading environmental awareness and rational use of energy.
During the festivity, G NGO’s president Mr. Nader Nakib gave a brief speech, in which he stressed that the real issue is in the proposed solutions to environmental problems and not within the ordinary Lebanese citizen.
The concert was characterized by three zeros: zero conventional energy as solar panels have been installed to harvest power from the sun, zero waste by using recyclable material and zero carbon, and it received support from many participating companies along with thousands of Lebanese youth that attended the concert.
The ceremony included by artistic dancing and singing performances that lasted till midnight with the participation of Adel Karam, Jad Talib, Ali Ajami x Pim van Harten, Noel and Michelle Kesrouani, Chyno x Al rajul al hadid, Arton string quartet x Roudy Ghafari and Ali Ajami x Silviu Paganini.
The World Wide Fund for Nature WWF launched “Earth Hour”, one of the biggest events around the world, urging millions around the world to turn off lights, with the participation of 178 countries and territories this year. This event is organized annually to highlight the importance of environmental sustainability and how can each individual and institution make a distinguished influence to protect environment.
