When breast cancer is detected early and is in the localized stage, it can be treatable and survivable.
The three steps for early detection include:
- Monthly breast self-exams
- Regular clinical breast exams
- Mammograms
- What to look for in a breast self-exam?
- A lump or swelling in the breast, upper chest or armpit
- Rash or crusting around the nipple
- A change in the skin, such as puckering or dimpling
- A change in the color of the breast
- Unusual liquid (discharge) from either nipple
- Changes in size or shape of the breast
- How to perform a Clinical Breast Exam?
A clinical breast exam is performed by your family physician or gynecologist at your annual exam to recognize any abnormalities or warning signs.
- Why do you need a Mammogram?
A mammogram is important because it can often show a breast lump before it can be felt.
Women at the age of 40 and older should have mammograms every 1 or 2 years.
