Beirut, April 25, 2016: Roadster diner, the pioneering Lebanese restaurant chain for American themed dining, hosted the Youth Association for Social Awareness (YASA) in its Bliss Branch, as part of a series of workshops within its Food Safety Awareness campaign, in collaboration with the Nutrition and Food Science Department at the Faculty of Agriculture and Food Science at the American University of Beirut. Roadster diner, being a partner to the local community, is providing an opportunity for NGOs to collect donations by hosting a brunch at Roadster and participating in these workshops which revolve around food safety at home.
The second awareness workshop was held in collaboration with YASA, with the participation of a large number of mothers. A detailed scientific explanation was given by Ms. Rita Jalakh from the Nutrition and Food Science Department at the Faculty of Agriculture and Food Science at the American University of Beirut. She discussed food safety and the proper methods to follow during grocery shopping as well as how to store food. She also made a clear distinction between the good and bad habits that we often have at home when it comes to food storage and preparation. The lecture touched on hygiene procedures while preparing food at home, food sterilization methods and how to deal with frozen food. Finally the workshop also dealt with food safety during cooking, the temperature needed to get rid of bacteria while still getting a healthy and delicious meal, as well as the means to maintain our children’s health based on choice of food.
Director of the food safety department at Roadster Diner Jana Majzoub expressed her happiness with the success of these awareness workshops that Roaster launched as part of its corporate social responsibility (CSR) program in collaboration with the Nutrition and Food Science Department at the Faculty of Agriculture and Food Science at the American University of Beirut. She was especially content with the positive response it received which was reflected in the NGOs and their eagerness to participate. Majzoub said, “Roadster Diner believes that its partnership with the local community is an essential part of its culture and thus works to support its development by all means. It is also committed to supporting institutions and NGOs that work in service of society. For that reason it is welcoming associations and encouraging them to take advantage of its food safety workshops, as well as the fundraising opportunity it offers them in order to help them finance their programs and activities”.
Dr. Nasr al-Din Head of the Nutrition and Food Science Department at the Faculty of Agriculture and Food Sciences at the American University in Beirut confirmed the importance of having such awareness workshops on food safety persist in the long run. She said, “We are very pleased with the success and persistence of these workshops, especially since they affect the various segments of society through the variety of the participating NGOs and associations. After all, our mission is to spread community awareness on issues related to nutrition and food safety”.
