Stress can affect anyone including children at any age. Children can experience stress due to various reasons and sources including new sibling at home, family problems, academic pressure, peer pressure, bullying…etc. Children may find it difficult to recognize and verbalize their feelings when experiencing stress. Therefore as parents, we should be able to spot the signs early on and try to help our children. Some warning signs that your child is feeling stressed: • Nightmares • Trouble concentrating and completing homework • Physical aggression such as biting, kicking, and hitting his/her friends • Bedwetting • Eating or sleeping disorders • Hyperactivity for instance being constantly disobedient, having temper tantrums…etc • Feeling left out and withdrawing from family due to bullying, new sibling, divorce…etc How can you help your child cope with stress? • Make sure your child is getting proper rest and good nutrition • Cut back on after-school activities • Try to keep the stress levels low at home • Spend more time with your kid each day and create more activities together • Anticipate potential stressful situations and talk about it with your child • Encourage your child to talk about the situation that is causing stress If your child is experiencing significant symptoms of stress on daily basis, consult a psychologist to help identify the problem and develop effective strategies to resolve overwhelming feelings of stress.
