Rebirth Beirut announced the signature of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Light Inc., a leading provider of lighting solutions in Lebanon, whereby the latter will supply 562 Philips LED streetlights, financed through Signify Foundation, to illuminate the streets of Beirut under Rebirth Beirut’s “Let’s Light Up Our Community” initiative in collaboration with MEDCO, on Wednesday March 27, 2024.
Rebirth Beirut is an NGO whose mission is to revive Beirut following the challenges it is facing and to bring hope back to its people. Its main ongoing projects include the street lighting initiative, the restoration of traffic lights project and the rehabilitation of public gardens.
Founded in 1981, Light Inc. is the exclusive agent of Philips Lighting (now “Signify” Netherlands) in Lebanon. Additionally, the company manufactures professional luminaires in its local factory, formerly owned by Philips. Over the years, Light Inc. has successfully executed numerous projects, including lighting installations for stadiums, malls, and office spaces.
The Signify Foundation is a non-profit organization with a mission to enable access to sustainable lighting solutions to underserved communities.
The signature of the MOU took place at Rebirth Beirut’s headquarters in Gemmayze in the presence of representatives from both entities and members of the board and media.
This partnership exemplifies the power of collaboration between the private sector and NGOs to make a positive impact on local communities.
The first part of the donated Philips LED streetlights was used for lighting up the streets surrounding the American University of Beirut Medical Center at the end of February 2024.
Mr. Gaby Fernaine, Founder and President of Rebirth Beirut, expressed his gratitude for the collaboration, stating, “Our collaboration with Light Inc. will facilitate a sustainable transition from sodium lamps to more energy efficient LED streetlights”.
He then added: “By collaborating with the private sector, we are transforming our city’s landscape and the lives of its residents.”
In his turn, Mr. Namir Chahine, General Manager of Light Inc., stated, “Teaming up with Rebirth Beirut shows our dedication to improving Beirut. We’re not just lighting streets; we’re brightening the city’s future.”
It is worth mentioning that since May 2022, the “Let’s Light Up Our Community” Initiative illuminated 142 streets, 4 squares, 2 gardens, 2 stairs and one tunnel in Beirut.
