The American University of Beirut (AUB) Art Galleries will open Huge Likeness, a solo exhibition by Jordanian artist Ala Younis, on Friday, September 25, 2026, from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at the AUB Rose and Shaheen Saleeby Museum on Sidani Street in Hamra, Beirut.
The exhibition brings together works from Younis’s research-led practice, some of which emerged through engagement with AUB’s libraries and archives. Beginning with fragments such as a building, an image, an anecdote, or a publication, Younis explores narratives of modernity, politics, and cultural imagination in the Arab region, examining how architecture, publishing, and personal testimony shape memory and our understanding of the present.
Architecture runs through the exhibition as both subject and method. Featured works include Plan for Greater Baghdad (2015), which draws on archival research and oral histories to examine the development of modernist architecture in Baghdad. More recent works revisit the experience of studying architecture, exploring drawing tools, prototypes, and the transition from hand to machine.
The exhibition is produced and funded by AUB Art Galleries and Collections and the Philippe Jabre Exhibition Fund, with additional support from the Sheikh Zayed Bin Sultan Al Nahyan Chair for Arabic and Islamic Studies.
The exhibition runs from September 25, 2026, through January 10, 2027, with opening hours Monday through Friday, noon to 6 p.m.
