The University of Balamand (UOB), represented by its President Dr. Elias Warrak, signed academic partnership agreements with several heads of Municipalities from Akkar at the university’s main campus in Koura. These included the Head of the Municipalities Union of Al-Joumeh and Mayor of Rahbeh, Mr. Adnan Melhem; the Head of the Municipalities Union of North Akkar and Mayor of Qoubaiyat, Mr. Michel Abdo; the Head of the Municipalities Union of Chafit and Mayor of Miniara, Mr. Tony Abboud, represented by the Mayor of Halba, Mr. Abd el Hamid Halabi; and the Head of the Municipalities Union of West Dreib, Mr. Jean Jalloul, Head of Municipalities of Al Minieh, Mr. Toufic Zreika. Also in attendance were Dr. George Bahr, University of Balamand Provost, Dr. Salim Kanaan, Vice President for Enrollment Management and Dr. Elie Karam, Dean of the Issam M. Fares Faculty of Technology.
Driven by a common vision, this partnership focuses on empowering individuals through education, values, and community engagement, and reinforcing the role of academia in regional development. The agreement reflects both sides’ commitment to improving education, encouraging knowledge exchange, and providing students with academic and financial support. The university will offer opportunities for students in the region to pursue their studies in selected fields, while the unions will help support and follow up on their academic journey according to the terms of the agreement.
During the meeting, Dr. Warrak gave a presentation on the university’s latest activities and projects. The discussion also addressed key issues concerning the region of Akkar and explored possible ways of cooperation to support local development. Dr. Warrak stated: “At UOB, we believe that education is the foundation for building individuals and society. This cooperation with the Municipalities Unions of Akkar is a practical step toward supporting the region’s youth and helping them continue their university education during these challenging times.”
Both parties emphasized the importance of this collaboration, which brings together the efforts of the academic sector and local institutions to serve people and society and to build a better future for students.
