Bernie Ecclestone’s personal 1934 Lagonda is up for auction F1 tycoon has owned this pre-war British classic, estimated at €175,000, for 12 years Auction live exclusively on Catawiki from 25 July to 10 August
Amsterdam, 25 July 2025 Brad Pitt’s Formula 1 debut has reignited excitement around the world’s most glamorous sport, where precision meets unpredictability at 300km per hour. It’s an unforgiving dance of engineering, instinct, and raw human will. But long before Hollywood joined the grid, one man transformed F1 into a global empire: Bernie Ecclestone. Now, Catawiki, the leading online marketplace for special objects, is celebrating that legacy by auctioning his personal 1934 Lagonda.
Bernie Ecclestone transformed Formula 1 from a fragmented sport into a global spectacle by centralising TV rights, revolutionising team management, and securing the deals that made F1 a multi-billion-dollar empire. At the tail end of this transformation, in 1996, he acquired the 1934 Lagonda and held onto it through the closing years of his reign as F1’s commercial mastermind, owning it during what is widely regarded as the golden era of his influence. Reflecting on Bernie’s imprint, Franco Vigorito, Catawiki’s cars expert commented: “Bernie didn’t choose cars casually. He chose symbols. This Lagonda is poised, powerful, and unmistakably British–just like him.”
Rarity car estimated at €175,000
Far from a museum piece, this Lagonda is a true rarity: one of just 261 chassis ever built between 1932 and 1934. Originally delivered as a refined four-door saloon with a seamless, pillarless design, it was fitted in 1991 with the more desirable more sought-after convertible-style T2 Tourer body–featuring three doors, a folding roof, and flowing lines–by the respected coachbuilder Kevin Roskruge. The result? A sleek configuration with timeless pre-war elegance and performance to match. Under the hood, the 6-cylinder inline engine was fully restored paired with a rare pre-select gearbox, offering smoother acceleration and exceptional drivability for a car of its age.
The auction runs from 25 July to 10 August, exclusively on Catawiki.
