Jounieh, November 18th 2022: On the occasion of World Diabetes Day, the LAU Medical Center -Saint John’s Hospital in Jounieh organized two open days during the month of November in the hospital lobby to create awareness on this disease.
Diabetes is a chronic metabolic health condition characterized by elevated levels of blood glucose (or blood sugar), which leads over time to serious damage to the heart, blood vessels, eyes, kidneys and nerves.
With diabetes, the body breaks down most of the food we eat into sugar (glucose) and releases it into the bloodstream.
Diabetes currently affects one in ten people worldwide.
The objective of this open days was to create awareness on this disease while offering the community free screening of blood glucose level provided by One Touch and Saramed Bionime BD sponsors and by providing patients with free medical consultation with Dr. Jocelyn Faris and Dr. Elizabeth Abou Jaoudeh, hence abiding by the LAU Medical Centers moto to Heal with Compassion.
On the 1st date, around 170 people got tested and the LAUMC-SJH team distributed to all attendees leaflets to raise awareness about healthy eating with diabetes, OneTouch vouchers offer and Bio-Oil Dry Skin Gel sachet sample.
On the 2nd day, over 250 people get tested and the team offered all patients around 500 pen Insulin needles courtesy of the Saramed Bionime BD sponsor and 70 Diabetes Medications for free courtesy of Pharmaline.
Established in 1991 by the International Diabetes Federation with support from World Health Organisation in response to growing concerns about the health and economic threat posed by diabetes, World Diabetes Day became an official UN day in 2006.
