Recently, the government of Italy and UNESCO signed a funding agreement in support of the rehabilitation and reopening of the Sursock Museum, through the Italian Agency for Development Cooperation (AICS) and under UNESCO’s initiative Li Beirut. The Italian Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs, Marina Sereni, and the Director of UNESCO’s regional office in Beirut, Costanza Farina, signed the Memorandum of Understanding at the the Sursock Museum, in the presence of the Chairman of the Museum’s Board, Dr. Tarek Mitri.
This grant, which amounts to 965,000 USD, is a significant contribution towards the Museum’s reconstruction and its full reopening.
Thanks to the support of the Italian government and UNESCO, and that of numerous other institutions and organizations – including ALIPH and the French Ministry of Culture – we have now secured 2,376,751 USD out of a total of the estimated 3 million USD needed to complete the reconstruction of the Museum.
This is a crucial fundraising milestone that should be acknowledged and celebrated. But our work doesn’t stop here.
