Musandam, Oman – 9 September 2018 – Six Senses Zighy Bay has been working with the Sakina Bint Al Hussein School in Dibba, Oman to build them a yard that the school can use for social gatherings and activities for their students. To help their local community, the resort levelled and cleared gravel from a 750 square meters area in the school with the objective of creating a safe and functional play area for the girls. The resort also purchased free-moving AstroTurf to cover that constructed area and allow the school to engage the students outdoors in a safe and comfortable way. The project has taken into consideration all health and safety measures for the girls to ensure that they will not slip, trip, or fall and get hurt on loose rubble anymore.
The project also raised the height of some of the hazardous manholes in that area which were nearly four feet below ground level. In the process of the construction, the team also made sure to not displace any trees that had grown out of the ground and built parapets around them from mountain rocks to add a little Zighy touch. The project commenced mid-July and finished in the first week of August.
“This space will give the students the opportunity to learn and experience their school life both indoors and outdoors. We’re very proud to be able to support the all-girls Sakina Bint Al Hussein School in Dibba, Oman. Education, in all its forms is a very important thing for any child and especially in this day and age, to be able to empower these youngsters to learn and grow in a safe environment was a wonderful opportunity. We hope to do more for them in the future and share our passion and love for sustainability with the teachers and students alike,” said Aaron McGrath, General Manager of Six Senses Zighy Bay.
Previously, Six Senses Zighy Bay’s dedicated sustainability manager, Nachiketa Tuteja, has conducted workshops and awareness initiatives over special occasions like World Water Day, showing the girls the importance of and how to conserve water. He has also taken them to Dibba farm to introduce them to farming practices and the importance of locally sourced food. Later in October, he plans to take the resort’s permaculturist Manuel Schmidt, over to the school and teach them how to take care of the garden on their premises.
