Dry mouth or Xerostomia is caused by reduced saliva in the mouth. Saliva helps to keep the mouth wet, cleans the teeth by flushing out debris and acts on acids produced by bacteria. This acts as a first line of defense against tooth decay.
What are the signs of dry mouth?
The common signs of dry mouth are:
- Burning sensation in the mouth
- Sore throat
- Trouble in speaking
- Difficulty in swallowing
- Hoarseness
- Dry nasal passages
What causes dry mouth?
- Dehydration due to excessive sweating or illness, or not drinking enough water
- Mouth breathing due to sleeping with open mouth or blocked nose
- Anxiety
- Cancer treatment (radiotherapy/chemotherapy)
- Diabetes
- Side effect of certain medicines (E.g.: antihistamines, decongestants, diuretics, etc.)
- Sjögren’s syndrome (autoimmune disorder)

- Drink lots of water
- Use sugar-free chewing gum
- Use lip balm for dry lips
- Brush twice daily and use alcohol-free mouthwash to prevent decay
- Avoid the following:
- Smoking
- Caffeine or fizzy/ carbonated drinks
- Acidic, spicy, salty or sugary foods
