And uniquely offers the FIT screening test in Lebanon, for free until the 20th of April
Beirut, Lebanon, March 2017: On the occasion of the colorectal cancer awareness month, in cooperation with SAID NGO for the prevention against colon cancer, Bellevue Medical Center (BMC) conducted an awareness campaign for the prevention against this type of cancer, considered to be the third leading worldwide cancer. Colorectal cancer is, however, preventable through early screening and detection. The campaign thus seeks to build awareness by bringing to light colorectal cancer, its symptoms and relevant prevention methods.
Most people with colorectal cancer do not show any symptoms in the early stages. According to international recommendations, everyone must undergo routine examinations starting at the age of 50 for any possible early detection. The Fecal Immunochemical Test (FIT) remains the most accurate to day in matters of diagnosis, to be conducted preferably on a yearly basis. Furthermore, colonoscopy is deemed the ideal test every 10 years, despite it being costlier than the FIT. It is worth noting that Bellevue Medical Center is the sole hospital in Lebanon providing the Fecal Immunochemical Test (FIT). The test was offered for free during the campaign period and continues to be so through end of April in order to encourage citizens to partake.
In Lebanon, awareness in this regard is very limited. Considering results from a recent statistical study, most Lebanese do not comprehend the nature of this type of cancer or haven’t even heard of it. As such, this campaign is crucial in promoting the level of social awareness and in unveiling the disease’s most important facets. According to a renowned expert at BMC, 99% of cases received are already in very advanced stages. He then underlined the close link between the level of awareness on the one hand, and, on the other hand, the frequency of screening necessary for detecting numerous cancers and treating them in their primary stages – i.e. helping save the lives of many patients.
The campaign also covered many activities, including an awareness stand at the hospital, a social media campaign, as well as interactive fun games.
