The Faculty of Medicine and Medical Sciences at the University of Balamand celebrated a significant milestone in the lives of 115 aspiring doctors during its White Coat Ceremony on the 13th of May 2025. The event, held at the Koura Campus, symbolized the students’ entry into the clinical practice and their commitment to uphold the highest standards of care, compassion, and professionalism.
The ceremony opened with a speech delivered by Dr. Karim Echtay, who stated: “It is in the clinical years that you will begin to understand that medicine is not just a science, but an art — one that requires both technical expertise and deep human understanding” He added: “You are the class that studied through some of the darkest days in Lebanon’s recent history. During this year, our country faced a war that disrupted lives, displaced families, and cast an ever-present shadow of uncertainty over us. Yet, through these challenges, you did not falter.”
Dr. Echtay’s speech was followed by a heartfelt address from student Ibrahim Kashmar, who emphasized the importance of staying in Lebanon, saying: “We stay because we believe in healing—not just individuals, but nations. Because each life we touch weaves another thread in our nation’s recovery. Because medicine is not about ideal circumstances. It’s about presence, compassion. It is about showing up exactly where people need us—as they are, where they are.”
Vice President for Medical Affairs and Dean of the Faculty of Medicine, Dr. Sami Azar, addressed the students with the following words: “As you begin this journey, let knowledge guide your hand, but let humanity guide your heart. In a world increasingly defined by speed, AI and technology, never underestimate the power of presence—a listening ear, a steady gaze, a simple act of kindness. Let your coat carry not just instruments and notes—but humility, curiosity, and courage.”
Dr. Elias Warrak, President of the University of Balamand, highlighted the significance of this pivotal transition in the lives of the students, saying: “Your commitment today is a sacred and profound one. Lead with empathy, practice your medical journey with compassion and love. Treat every single patient with dignity, and carry your white coat with pride and humility. Never stop learning, and never lose your sense of compassion.” He then addressed the families, saying: “You are partners in this journey. Your sacrifices laid the foundation that brought these students to where they stand today.”
The University of Balamand expresses its pride in its students, who today begin their professional journey with a spirit of dedication and giving, wishing them a path filled with success and creativity.
