Lasvit, the award-winning design house specialized in glassmaking, is excited to announce the unveiling of “In Bloom,” a site-specific glass installation created for the lobby of a new landmark building designed by Zaha Hadid Architects in Hong Kong, The Henderson.
The piece, an abstract flower composed of butterfly and dragonfly wings, symbolizes the beating heart of the building and spans 4.5 meters in diameter.
The designer of the installation, Michaela Mertlová (Lasvit Design Team) drew inspiration from her two-year stay in Hong Kong, a city known for its striking contrast between urban life and natural surroundings. “In Bloom” captures this balance, with its organic form serving as a vibrant centerpiece in the lobby of what is reportedly the world’s most expensive plot of land, acquired for $3 billion by Henderson Land Development in 2017.
“This installation acts as the beating heart of the building,” says Mertlová. “It captures the delicate balance between nature and the city’s dynamic energy, offering a visual representation of life in Hong Kong. Zaha Hadid Architects gave me exceptional freedom in design, allowing me to transform my personal experiences of Hong Kong into a glass installation. “
“In Bloom” combines multiple glass techniques, including slumped glass, iris effects, and sandblasting, which together create a flickering effect reminiscent of fluttering wings and beating heart. The dynamic sculpture pulses like a living organism, infusing the space with energy and light. The smallest components are just 0.5 meters, while the largest reach 1.5 meters, contributing to the sculpture’s sense of movement and fluidity.
Mertlová chose to turn the shape of dragonfly wings into a composition resembling the form of an abstract flower. It is believed that a dragonfly is the soul of a dragon, and the resulting installation celebrates wisdom, harmony, and prosperity, all qualities the dragonfly symbolizes.
The Henderson, designed by Zaha Hadid Architects, has become a world-class architectural site in Hong Kong. Located at Murray Road, Central, this new 43,000-square-meter super Grade-A office tower is a showcase of health, resilience, smart technology and sustainability.
Equipped with state-of-the-art, innovative and sustainable design, The Henderson echoes the organic beauty of the natural world, reinterpreting the structural forms and layering of a Bauhinia bud about to blossom. With its high-tensile steel structure, The Henderson caters to exceptionally wide, light-filled, column-free open offices which offer flexibility and an unprecedented level of collaboration for its tenants. The Henderson has already received numerous awards and accolades, including the Grand Award (New Buildings Category: Projects Under Construction and/or Design – Commercial) at the Green Building Award 2021 and a Platinum Pre-certification in both WELL Building Standard (WELL) and Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED). In addition, the project has been awarded the Platinum certification for both WiredScore and SmartScore in recognition of its outstanding digital connectivity and advanced smart technology.
