The Beirut-based Artual Gallery is embarking on the next step of its journey by participating in the 2019 edition of Volta International Art Fair at Basel, which is being held from June 10 to 15.
Gallery owner Hind Ahmad said she was delighted to be extending Artual’s reach on the global stage by taking part in the art fair, which has carved a niche as a space for discovery since its launch in 2005.
Artual, which opened in Downtown on March 15, will be showing the work of five artists at Booth B18, namely: Jean Philippe Duboscq; Jonni Cheatwood; Katrin Fridriks; Rob Tucker; and Stickymonger.
Each of the selected artists will be bringing something different to the show.
Brussels-based Duboscq’s work is marked by free-flowing paint runs and writings in bold colors, while Cheatwood, who lives and works in the US, is known for his texture-rich, whimsical pieces featuring almost cartoon-like deconstructed portraitures. In contrast, Fridriks’ swirled abstract works draw on the volcanic landscapes of her native Iceland, while Tucker, from New Zealand, uses still life to explore his creative process. The Brooklyn-based artist Stickymonger, meanwhile, is well known for producing giant murals and animation-inspired subjects.
Commenting ahead of the fair, Hind Ahmad said she was very excited to be taking a selection of the talent on show at Artual Gallery to another level and a wider audience, adding that visitors could look forward to a thematic display which will combine both abstract and figurative works in a vibrant mix of color.
“Volta has built up a reputation as the go-to space for new international positions and also maintains a strong focus on solo presentations which chimes well with me and the duty I have to the artists I represent,” she said. “I look forward to showcasing the work of these fresh and exciting artists at what is undoubtedly an ideal and important venue.”
