The mouth is a mirror to your general health and well-being. A healthy mouth helps you speak, smile, eat, drink, and live with self-esteem. On the other hand, an unhealthy mouth can lead to loss of self- confidence and social isolation, in addition to pain, discomfort and diseases.
Certain diseases such as diabetes, heart disease, respiratory disease, and certain cancers can affect the teeth, gums and mouth. It is never too late to start looking after your mouth.
Taking control of some common risk factors can help prevent and manage oral diseases, as well as other health conditions, including: • Eat healthy: Eating too much sugar and processed food is a major cause for tooth decay as well as diabetes, heart disease and cancer.
• Quit smoking: Smoking/smokeless tobacco can cause gum disease, oral cancer, heart disease and respiratory disease.
• Practice good oral care: Poor oral hygiene can make the teeth and gums vulnerable to oral and other diseases. Simple steps like regular brushing twice a day, flossing and rinsing with mouthwash can go a long way.
• Have regular dental check-ups: A look in your mouth can show nutritional deficiencies, unhealthy habits like tobacco and signs of other diseases. Early detection and treatment helps combat oral diseases and associated general health conditions.
