The Secretary-General of the “Union for Lebanon” Massoud Achkar praised the decision of the Parliament’s Administration and Justice Committee to abolish article 522 of the Lebanese penal code, which stipulated an exemption from the rapist’s conviction and punishment if he marries the victim.
Massoud Achkar reiterated that women are half of the society and raise the other half, as they are the beating heart of our nation and its own conscience. They are the mothers of younger generations and without them we lose life, our nation and the future. Thus, it was necessary to put an end to all that contributes to the practice of injustice and retardation towards our women, and limits the progress of our Lebanese society and its openness. Therefore, the abolition of article 522 is overall a form of victory for our nation.
The Secretary-General of the “Union for Lebanon” wished that the Parliament would effectively vote as soon as possible on the decision to abolish article 522, hoping to continue in improving many unfair laws.
