Beirut – 20 September 2017 — ABAAD, resource center for gender equality releases today their new campaign for the Men Center in Lebanon: “Calculate it correctly! don’t lose yourself… Don’t lose your family!” …We hear a man’s voice self-reflecting on conflicting emotions: fear, sadness, and anger. Emotions that have resulted of tiredness, stress, irritation, and at times a feeling of ineptitude and inadequacy. The trigger of these stressors were the loss of an income source among other reasons. “Do I lose control, or do I cry?” pondering this man’s voice. Facing this self-reflection, we see an abused woman trying to hide the bruises on her face, and another woman not showing any bruise, as the silence sometimes hurts much more than any word could. This is one of the ideas captured by the promotional TV spot, which attempts to highlight the services provided by the Men Center. Stressors are widespread and multifaceted and very present in everybody’s lives. However, the way people perceive and react to these stressors varies due to internalized value systems, cultural, and gendered norms. Because of these gendered socializations, the behavioral manifestations of men in relation to these stressors could sometimes be violent. The Men Center takes this into account and offers men engendered psychosocial and psychological services aimed at managing abusive behaviors. Issues of the intersectionality of socialization, anger, and violence are discussed and reviewed with beneficiaries at ABAAD’s Men Center”, states Ms Ghida Anani, Director of ABAAD. In this TV spot, we ask men to consider the effects anger, abuse, neglect, or violence could have on their families. We warn them not to wait until it is too late. We inform them that the low-cost, confidential, and anonymous services of the Men Center is a phone call away. We ask them to learn how to build equal partnerships with the people in their lives and how to draw strength from those relationships. We remind them that if they do not, they may be left with only the images of what once was. They may only be left with the feeling of regret!
