On World Heart Day, remember to look after your heart with a healthy lifestyle. The first step is by knowing the factors that most affect the health of the heart and lead to cardiovascular diseases (CVD) and heart attacks. The main factors are:
- High Blood glucose levels which can be indicative of diabetes. If diabetes is left untreated, it can put you at increased risk of heart disease and stroke.
- High blood pressure as it is the number one risk factor for CVD.
- High cholesterol levels which can lead to a heart attack or stroke.
- Obesity and overweight.
- Tobacco smoke.
The five major symptoms of a heart attack are:
- Pain or discomfort in the jaw, neck, or back.
- Feeling weak, light-headed, or faint.
- Chest pain or discomfort.
- Pain or discomfort in arms or shoulder.
- Shortness of breath.
Enjoy a healthier life by eating and drinking well. Some simple lifestyle changes can reduce your risk of heart disease and stroke. For a healthy heart:
- Stay away from processed and prepackaged foods, high in sugar and fat.
- Cut down on salt to maintain healthy blood pressure.
- Drink water or unsweetened juices instead of sugary beverages and fruit juices.
- Eat fresh fruits instead of sweet and sugary sweets.
- Include more fruits and veggies in your daily diet.
- Prepare your own lunch for work or for your kids at school.
- Be physically active as regular and moderate exercise is great for the heart.
- Quit smoking.
- Maintain a healthy weight.
