Sunburn is a red and painful skin that feels hot to the touch. It usually appears after overexposure to ultraviolet (UV) light from the sun.
Sunburn can occur in less than 15 minutes, but the peak redness will take 12-24 hours after the exposure. In some extreme sunburns, blistering can occur. In much more severe cases, symptoms include:
- Fever
- Chills
- Nausea and vomiting
- Weakness
Can you prevent sunburns?
- The best way to avoid sunburns is to minimize the amount of exposure to sunlight
However, you can take other precautions such as:
- Protect your eyes with sunglasses
- Avoid the sun during peak hours of 10 am – 2 pm
- Use a sunscreen with a SPF of 30 or higher
- Always apply sunscreen at least 15 minutes before going outdoors as your skin needs 15 minutes to absorb the sunscreen
- Reapply sunscreen every 2 hours and after swimming or excessive sweating
- Sit in locations with shade
