Schiaparelli launches a new project dedicated to the most iconic jackets of its legacy. The first edition focuses on the Zodiac jacket.
Elsa Schiaparelli was the first designer to give a theme to her collections. The Astrological collection of Winter 1938/39 was inspired by starry nights, the Milky Way, the Sun King, constellations, astronomy and astrology. The Zodiac jacket was the most iconic as well as personal item of the season for Elsa. As a child, she was very fond of her famous astronomer uncle, Giovanni Schiaparelli (who discovered the canals on Mars). As explained in her autobiography Shocking Life, her uncle described the beauty spots on her left cheek as resembling the constellation Ursa Major.
Since then, Ursa Major has become one of Schiaparelli’s leitmotivs also appearing on the left shoulder of the Zodiac jacket: a midnight blue piece of tailoring highlighted by luminescent embroideries of crystals, caviar beads, golden metal plate and silver thread, all hand-made by Lesage. Sun, moon, stars and Ursa Major align with the twelve glyphs of the zodiac.
Today, design director Bertrand Guyon created a contemporary version completely re-tailored by our atelier while keeping its original astrological motif once again embroidered by Lesage. Starring Sabine Getty, the limited edition shows its timeless allure from day to night.
Exclusively available at Schiaparelli boutique-salons, 21 place Vendôme.
