MWPR is delighted to present Verhaal Studio, the latest addition to our roster of remarkable design talents ! |
About Verhaal Studio Verhaal Studio was established in 2016 in Sydney Australia by Neydine Bak and Dewald Struwig. The architecture and interior studio’s unique aesthetic celebrates art, artisanal craft and contemporary design, creating exceptional hospitality and residential spaces that are as beautiful as they are functional. Each project is anchored in the client’s vision, needs, and the stories they wish to tell. Verhaal’s layered approach to architecture and interior design is guided by their passion for storytelling; curating design elements that come together to tell meaningful narratives. Their appreciation for luxury artisanal workmanship from across the globe, enables them to reimagine pieces and design spaces that are visually interesting and functional, infusing each project with a distinct and singular representation of the Verhaal experience. Sustainability and craftsmanship are core values for Verhaal. Championed by their curiosity and interest in global artisanal craft, the studio works with a community of artists, makers and other creative studios to develop unique projects using a combination of different artistic disciplines. By making artisans an integral part of the design process, Verhaal supports and ensures the continuity and growth of their craft. Generosity is at the foundation of Verhaal Studio’s work, indulging their clients in a studied selection of design elements that have inspired them. From original Brazilian patterns to Grecian wrought iron work, it is when placed side by side in the right proportions creating a juxtaposition of styles and materiality as well as a play on patterns, texture and color that sparks curiosity and speaks to the curation’s authenticity, all the while maintaining Verhaal’s light and airy approach to contemporary design. Balance plays an important part in the Verhaal process; an engaging tension between the timeless and current, rich and the weightless, dense and the light. The studio’s discerning curation creates experiences that are equally familiar and inviting, new and exciting. Fueled by a respect and appreciation for absolute quality, superior workmanship and artistic integrity, Verhaal Studio aims to create exceptionally authentic and inviting spaces that resonate and inspire clients and visitors alike; providing enriching experiences and enhanced environments to elevate the experience of everyday life. ” Verhaal is a beautiful expression for the layered narratives we create for our clients and has a personal connection to our South African heritage. It articulates the stories we aim to instill within the spaces we deliver. There is often a sense of romance and whimsy associated with the tales our clients want to tell in their spaces and our name, Verhaal, relates to that.” The Creators of Verhaal Studio Verhaal co-founders, Neydine Bak and Dewald Struwig started their careers in their native South Africa. Both graduates of the University of Pretoria; they earned Masters in Interior Architecture and a Cum Laude Masters in Architecture respectively. They went on to pursue impressive positions in the worlds of hospitality at Design Partnership, and architecture firms, Paragon and Woods Bagot, before moving to Sydney, Australia where they established their Architecture and Interior studio in 2016. In 2021 Verhaal Studio launched their Middle Eastern outpost in Dubai. This hub serves the clients of the region, and has to date been credited with the architectural and interior design and implementation of award-winning hospitality outlets such as Flamingo Room and Avli, in addition to a number of private luxury residential projects. Since its inception, Verhaal Studio has adopted a very intimate approach to their work, by focusing on the essence of the clients and the stories they wish to tell. With the use of superior artisanal craft and art, Verhaal has been able to translate these narratives to extraordinary spaces that are beautiful, functional and inviting. |
