Woven out of darkness, ASWAD is about stepping into the light. It’s a story about conflicts in relationships but also about the hope of redemption and revelation. The work is a tribute to the human ability to overcome adversity and find strength. Founded in 2018, the vision behind Beirut Contemporary Ballet stems from the combined expertise of its Artistic Directors. Jens Bjerregaard, a renowned dancer choreographer from Denmark, and Jana Younes, who comes from a filmmaking background, bring a unique blend of artistic and narrative depth to their work. With a strong passion, dedication, and respect to their art, Jana and Jens identified a gap in the Lebanese market for innovative and non-traditional dance, which they have successfully filled with their internationally accredited productions. The goal was and is to make dance accessible to a broader audience, to both the general public and dance connoisseurs, while maintaining high-quality productions that tell compelling stories, ensuring their narratives are understandable through functionality and the use of raw human reality and expressions. Jens Bjerregaard and Jana Saleh, Artistic Directors of Beirut Contemporary Ballet Beirut Contemporary Ballet is a powerhouse for movement across all live and digital platforms. BCB’s journey began with their first successful screen dance production, “And So Do I,” which won several awards globally. Having garnered almost 20 awards from renowned selections and festivals internationally, BCB has established itself as a creative force both locally and globally. Despite setbacks like the COVID-19 pandemic and the Lebanese revolution, their resilience has led to remarkable productions and opportunities from training dancers in Beijing to creating “Bodies of Water” in Hammana, Lebanon in 2022, which was then recreated in 2023 with the Ballet Contemporáneo de Camagüey in Cuba. In addition to performances, BCB offers a training program for regional dance enthusiasts aspiring to become professionals, furthering their commitment to the growth and awareness of the dance community. “Dance has a unique ability to speak to the soul and reflect on the beauty we all have in common. Our job is to reveal what you cannot imagine; Our job is to lift the audience and create more than just entertainment, Our job is to break the mold.” Join us on the 17th, 18th, and 19th of July at Metro Al Madina for “Aswad” to discover the passion, talent, and soul behind BCB’s work. Before ASWAD takes center stage, the performance is preceded by two screenings: 1- “Making Movement”, a short documentary that follows the creative process of BCB artistic directors Jana Younes and Jens Bjerregaard during the final days of rehearsal as they recreate their repertoire piece Bodies of Water with the Ballet Contemporáneo de Camagüey, Cuba. 2- ”One for the dreamers”: In a machine-like arena where hopelessness and monotony reign, everyone is in a routine that requires a relentless push. Amidst this desperation, there is, in some, a longing to a world outside the ring, a world for travelers and bearers of dreams.
