Gross insurance premiums of US$ (279.6) million by end of June 2010

The Insurance Commission of Jordan (IC) reported that the preliminary gross insurance premiums in the Jordanian market is US$ (297.6) million by the end of June 2010, compared to US$ (266) million recorded by the end of 2009, showing a growth of (12%).


According to IC s report the general insurance premiums is US$ (269) million. Whereas the life assurance premiums amounted to US$ (29.1) million showing an increase of (5%). On the other hand the gross paid claims amounted to US$ (195.4) million showing an increase of (16%).


In view of the IC’s continued efforts in regulating and supervising supporting services providers through issuing and implementing detailed instructions, their number amounted to (748) by the end of June 2010, with a growth rate of (14%) in comparison with the same period the previous year, including (507) insurance agents, (88) insurance brokers, (47) loss adjusters, (20) consultants, (13) actuaries, (11) reinsurance brokers, (15) companies administrating the expenses and medical insurance services, and(9) Bancassurance. In addition, the IC granted permits for conducting business in Jordan for (38) non-resident reinsurance brokers.


The IC efforts were also successful in settling (427) complaints out of   (452) received by the end of June 2010, mostly related to motor insurance.


In addition, the Insurance Disputes Resolution Committee settled (9) complaints by the end of June 2010, while the Committee received (10) complaints by the end of June 2010 compared to (10) complaints received by the end of June 2009.


Additionally, the Motor Accidents Compensation Fund Committee settled (22) claims by the end of June2010, while the Fund Committee received (25) complaints and (14) complaints during the same period in 2010 and 2009 respectively.


The statistics indicated that the insurance sector contribution percentage in the volume of shares traded at Amman Stock Exchange reached (3.8%) in June 2010, while the insurance sector price index reached (2647.4) points at end of June 2010.
